With the vote in the European Council on Friday 12th April, both the European Parliament and the European Council have now voted in favour of adopting the proposal from December 2023 to revise the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.

The revised EPBD forms part of the Fit for 55 package and aims to accelerate the renovation and decarbonisation of the building stock, reducing the energy consumption of buildings and ensuring that the energy that consumed is renewable. This is important as energy consumption in buildings accounts for almost 40 per cent of the total energy consumption in the EU and for approximately a third of greenhouse gas emissions.

Member States have two years to implement the new directive from the time of publication in the Official Journal. To support the member states in this effort, the Concerted Action EPBD will host a plenary meeting in Brussels in April dedicated to the revised EPBD, where member state experts will have an opportunity to discuss the directive and ask questions of the Commission.
